Solar occultation with SCIAMACHY: algorithm description and first validation

چکیده

This presentation concentrates on solar occultation measurements with the spaceborne spectrometer SCIAMACHY in the UV-Vis wavelength range. Solar occultation measurements provide unique information about the vertical distribution of atmospheric constituents. For retrieval of vertical trace gas concentration profiles, an algorithm has been developed based on the optimal estimation method. The forward model is capable of simulating the extinction signals of different species as they occur in atmospheric transmission spectra obtained from occultation measurements. Furthermore, correction algorithms have been implemented to address shortcomings of the tangent height pre-processing and inhomogeneities of measured solar spectra. First results of O3 and NO2 vertical profile retrievals have been validated with data from ozone sondes and satellite based occultation instruments. The validation shows very promising results for SCIAMACHY O3 and NO2 values between 15 to 35 km with errors of the order of 10% and 15%, respectively.

Improved stratospheric aerosol extinction profiles from SCIAMACHY: validation and sample results

Stratospheric aerosol extinction profiles have been retrieved from SCIAMACHY/Envisat measurements of limb-scattered solar radiation. The retrieval is an improved version of an algorithm presented earlier. The retrieved aerosol extinction profiles are compared to co-located aerosol profile measurements from the SAGE II solar occultation instrument at a wavelength of 525 nm. Comparisons were carr...

An investigation of the near-infrared collision induced absorption bands of oxygen with SCIAMACHY solar occultation data

The present work investigates the Collision Induced Absorption (CIA) bands of oxygen that occur at 1065 and 1270 nm from solar occultation data obtained with the spaceborne spectrometer SCIAMACHY. The effort is motivated by the interest in these two strong CIA bands in atmospheric research and the paucity of data on them under realistic atmospheric conditions. The observing geometry provides lo...

Using a photochemical model for the validation of NO2 satellite measurements at different solar zenith angles

SCIAMACHY (Scanning Imaging Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography) aboard the recently launched Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT) of ESA is measuring solar radiance upwelling from the atmosphere and the extraterrestrial irradiance. Appropriate inversion of the ultraviolet and visible radiance measurements, observed from the atmospheric limb, yields profiles of nitrogen dioxide, NO2, in the ...

Improvement of the Sciamachy Radiometric Calibration and Its Validation on Solar Irradiances in the Spectral Range from 240 to 2380 Nm

SCIAMACHY (SCanning Imaging Absorption spectroMeter for Atmospheric CHartographY) is part of the payload of ESA’s Environmental Satellite ENVISAT which was launched into a sun-synchronous polar orbit on 2002-03-01. First in-flight validation results already showed inconsistencies of the radiometric calibration of SCIAMACHY. Hence the on-ground calibration was thoroughly revised and correction f...
